Case study / 01

Aerofoil design and wind-tunnel testing

A personal engineering project completed through a university society, taking aerofoils from research and manufacture into experimental wind-tunnel testing.

01 / Project summary

Objective

Research, build and test aerofoils in a wind tunnel, using experimental evidence to evaluate the designs.

Requirements and constraints

  • Work within the available university-society facilities and wind tunnel.
  • Coordinate research, manufacture and testing across a three-person team.
  • Record design-specific requirements and constraints once the project notes are supplied.

02 / Accountability

My contribution

  • Personal responsibilities have not yet been supplied.
  • This section is deliberately reserved for specific decisions, manufacturing work, test responsibilities and analysis completed individually.
  • Team outcomes will remain separate from individual work.

03 / Engineering process

From brief to evaluation

  1. 01

    Research & concept development

The team researched aerofoils before progressing concepts. Candidate sources, comparison criteria and concept rationale are still to be added.

  2. 02

    Design process

The selected aerofoil geometry and the decisions that shaped it will be documented when project records are available.

  3. 03

    Manufacture

Aerofoils were built for testing. Materials, manufacturing method, tolerances and quality checks remain to be supplied.

  4. 04

    Wind-tunnel test setup

The manufactured aerofoils were tested in a wind tunnel. Instrumentation, configuration and repeatability controls remain to be documented.

  5. 05

    Measurements

The measurements collected and their units have not been supplied, so no values or inferred results are shown.

  6. 06

    Analysis

The analysis method and conclusions will be added from the original evidence rather than reconstructed from assumptions.

Design decisions

  • Concept-selection criteria to be added from project notes.
  • Geometry and manufacturing decisions to be added with their engineering rationale.

Manufacture or implementation

The team manufactured aerofoils for wind-tunnel testing. Further detail is intentionally withheld until materials, methods and individual responsibilities are confirmed.

04 / Test methodology

Testing, results and evidence

Method

Testing took place in a wind tunnel and involved experimental measurement and analysis. The test matrix, instrumentation and procedure are awaiting project evidence.

Evidence status

Results are not published yet because measured values and supporting plots have not been supplied. This avoids presenting estimated or reconstructed performance as evidence.

Limitations

  • Available details are currently insufficient to assess uncertainty or repeatability.
  • The effect of manufacturing accuracy cannot be discussed until the build method is documented.
  • Further limitations should be drawn from the original test record.

05 / Improvement

Next iteration

  1. Add the original test matrix, measurements and plots.
  2. Compare measured behaviour with the design objective.
  3. Identify a justified geometry or manufacturing change for a second iteration.
